Belfast is the starting point for most Giant’s Causeway visits, and the first real decision is whether to drive yourself or book a tour. Both work. Which one’s right for you depends on how much you actually want to see, and how much you want to think about logistics along the way.
Tour or self-drive?
Book a tour if: you don’t want to drive on the left, you’d rather have a guide narrating the history and myths as you go, or you want to see multiple stops (Dunluce Castle, Carrick-a-Rede, the Dark Hedges) without planning the route yourself. Most day tours run 8–10 hours door to door and start from around £24–35 per person — see our full list of bookable tours.
Drive yourself if: you want to set your own pace, skip stops that don’t interest you, or combine the Causeway with places tours don’t cover, like Ballintoy Harbour or Kinbane Castle. See our full getting there page for the drive itself — about an hour 15 minutes each way by the direct route.
A realistic hour-by-hour plan
This assumes an 8am start from Belfast, whichever way you’re travelling.
8:00am — Leave Belfast. If you’re on a tour, this is your pickup time; if driving, take the M2 toward Antrim/Ballymena/Coleraine.
9:15–9:30am — Arrive on the coast. Tours typically stop first at a viewpoint or Dunluce Castle; if driving, Dunluce Castle is a natural first stop of your own, a few minutes from Bushmills.
10:00–11:30am — The Giant’s Causeway itself. Give it more than a drive-by — see our honest take on whether it’s worth it for why rushing this part is the single biggest reason people come away disappointed. Walk further than the main stone cluster if you can.
11:30am–1:00pm — This is where tour and self-drive itineraries diverge most. Many tours head to Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge or the Dark Hedges next. If you’re driving, this is your chance to add Whiterocks Beach or Bushmills Distillery instead, if either interests you more.
1:00–2:00pm — Lunch. See our places to eat page for real, specific recommendations rather than a generic “grab something” — Bushmills and Portrush both have good options nearby.
2:00–4:30pm — Afternoon stop. Carrick-a-Rede if you haven’t already, or Ballintoy Harbour for something quieter and less crowded.
5:00–6:30pm — Return to Belfast.
What to skip if you’re short on time
If you’ve only realistically got the middle of the day, prioritise the Causeway and one other stop — Dunluce Castle or Carrick-a-Rede — rather than trying to fit in everything on this page.
