If you’re staying in Portrush or Bushmills rather than day-tripping from Belfast, you don’t need the compressed version — you’ve got a full day, and enough time to actually enjoy it rather than rush it. Here’s how we’d spend it.
Morning: the Causeway itself, done properly
Start early — before 10am if you can manage it, especially in summer. Our honest take on whether the Causeway is worth it covers this in more depth, but the short version: the difference between a disappointing visit and a genuinely great one is almost entirely about crowds and how far you walk. Don’t stop at the main stone cluster — the Red Trail above the Causeway is where most visitors never go, and it’s worth the climb.

Budget 2–2.5 hours here, more if the weather’s good and you fancy the full clifftop walk.
Late morning: Dunluce Castle
A short drive back toward Portrush, Dunluce Castle takes 30–45 minutes to properly look around. If you’ve got kids or an interest in Game of Thrones, this is where House Greyjoy’s Pyke was filmed — a good hook if you need one.
Lunch: Bushmills or Portrush
Head into Bushmills for lunch — the Bushmills Inn or the Bilberry Mill Cafe are both real, solid options, not just convenient ones. See our places to eat page for the full list either way.
Afternoon: Ballintoy and Carrick-a-Rede
This is the pairing that rewards unhurried time. Ballintoy Harbour first — half an hour is enough unless you want to walk the coastal path from there — then Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, which genuinely deserves an hour once you factor in the walk down and the crossing itself.
Alternative: if you’d rather skip the crowds at Carrick-a-Rede, swap in Whiterocks Beach or Magheracross Viewpoint instead — both quieter, both close to Portrush.
Early evening: back to base
Depending on where the day took you, you’re 15–20 minutes from Portrush or Bushmills either way. If you’ve got energy left and good weather, Whiterocks Beach or a walk along Portrush’s West Strand is a genuinely nice way to close the day out.
